Luck found the five dollar bill lying on the ground
Crinkled, smudged, worn, torn and now found
Brings wonder to how many hands it’s clutched
Or if how many lives it could have touched
Simple, I know but you can’t help but think
Five dollars isn’t much, enough to buy you a drink
But for the boy who saves that five for college
And his mother that prays for his knowledge
It’s a start when he’s earn enough
To go buy his books and stuff
He pays the book salesman the extra five
The Salesman decides after work to take a drive
He pays the gas man his money for gas
Later the gasman receives a call of great joy at mass
He’s going to be a father so he goes out to rejoice
Out to a restaurant of his beautiful wife’s choice.
They’re out celebrating and the waitress serves
Five dollar tip was enough to calm her nerves
The waitress comes home and looks into her fridge
A reminder of her bad weeks pay that went over ridge
She stands in alone at the grocery store line
Relieved that tonight she’ll have food to dine
She uses her tip to pay the cashier
The cashier can feel that his pay check is soon near
And when it comes he can buy the engagement ring
For the lovely girl that makes him feel like a king.
The ring salesman takes the charge in cash.
And thinks about his job, when he takes out the trash.
It’s time to go home and he steps out the door
Only to find that five dollar bill lying on the floor
He picks it up and keeps it in his hands
Stops at a local store to look at the brands
His job neither pays much so he keeps on walking
A strong wind comes and he keeps from balking
His soft loose hand cost him his five dollar bill
The wind blows the five on through the chill
When the slight storm is gone and swept away
The five dollar bill is left by itself to stay
Crinkled, smudged, worn, torn, and unfound
Until you go walking and see it on the ground.
Pick it up and you might wonder about it’s past
All the hands and the lives it’s touched in one vast.
